Jones was the sole child in a family of five that was raised in poverty. She lived with her mother in the cellar of the local church. When she attended Theodore Roosevelt High School Jones lived apart from her mother so that she could pursue her interest in running events. She lived with four different families throughout her time at high school to study all in the same place.
